Junior Results from the Deep South
A small but dedicated group of our juniors have just spent the last week in the South Island competing. Their first tournament was the New Zealand Junior Open held in Timaru from the 10th to the 12th of April. In the Boys Open Mathew Lucente was seeded 8th and was placed 6th. Both Gabe Yam and David Matthews competed but the field was too strong for them and their seedings. Abbie Plamer was seeded 3rd and was placed 3rd and Tyler Duberly was seeded 12 and was placed 12 keeping to their seedings.
Then it was off to Squash City in Invercargill for the group. Matthew Lucente, Gabe Yam and Abbie Palmer were in the New Zealand Junior team to take on the Australians. All 3 won all their matches on the Tuesday and the Wednesday helping in the convincing victory over Australia. The result was NZ 14 Australia 4 on the Tuesday and NZ 13 Australia 5 on the Wednesday.
They had a couple of days off before the Oceania Junior Championship. Once again Matthew, Gabe, Abbie and Tyler were on court. This is an age group tournament. Abbie and Tyler both competing in the under 19 girls division. Abbie once again was seeded 3rd and kept her seeding. Tyler was knocked out on the way to the plate final. She was seeded 13th but bettered that going into the plate round. In the Boys under 15 Matthew seeded number 1 and Gabe seeded number 3 ended up in the final together. Matthew was too strong for Gabe on the day taking the title with Gabe as runner up.
